Need to Find an Attorney?

Not long ago, I suffered a personal injury and needed to find an attorney. Although I felt like I should know what to do because I was in law school at the time, I did not know how to find a personal injury lawyer. I started looking for resources. The purpose of this article is to take what I learned and provide you with the resources to find any attorney, or specifically, like in my case, find a personal injury attorney in Los Angeles.
Many people say that if you are trying to find an attorney, you should ask an attorney, or, even better, ask someone who has hired a lawyer. I didn't know anyone who had retained an accident attorney in the area; so, I began to think about attorneys I knew. My uncle is an attorney and a mentor; so, I started with him. He helped me figure out what to ask my potential personal injury lawyer, and what to expect over the next few months. However, I had to keep looking, because he did not know any personal injury lawyers practicing in the area at that time. I moved on to my next resource for finding an attorney.
Most, if not all, of the other attorneys that I knew were connected with my law school. The next time I went to campus for class, I spoke with one of the deans. I also spoke with some professors about my personal injury, and my need to find an attorney. The consensus was to check with the local bar associations. Some bar associations maintain a list of accident attorneys who agree to provide free 15 to 30 minute consultations to people looking for an attorney.
Generally, the bar associations serve as resources for attorneys, but they also can be great resources when you are looking for an attorney. The most general bar association would probably be the American Bar Association. There are bar associations based on geographical location, and ones based on area of practice. For example, if you are looking at Los Angeles personal injury attorneys, there are the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Japanese American Bar Association of Greater Los Angeles, the Mexican American Bar Association of Los Angeles, the Latina Lawyers Bar Association, the California DUI Lawyers Association and many more. Some bar associations maintain a list of personal injury lawyers, bankruptcy attorneys, or a list of attorneys by specialty.
Attorneys are registered in every state in which they practice. In most states, the state registration organization is also responsible for attorney discipline. In California, there is the State Bar of California. It maintains a list of all attorneys registered to practice law in California, as well as a record of which attorneys have been sanctioned or have suffered other disciplinary action. Of course, you want to make sure your California personal injury attorney has not suffered any disciplinary action before you make your hiring decision. After you find a personal injury lawyer you are considering retaining, you may also want to do an Internet search on google or yahoo with the accident attorney's name in quotation marks.
Since my personal injury and recovery, I have listened to many other people's accident experiences. One lesson I learned is that usually it is not a good idea to take care of your personal injury claim on your own. Find yourself a good lawyer, or pursue representation from your insurance, if that option is available to you. The best advice I can give anyone who has been involved in a personal injury is to find other people who also have experienced a similar issue as you have, and ask them all about the attorney(s) they hired. That way, you will find an attorney with a proven track record who will provide you with the best result possible, and also, you will know what to expect.
Not only do you want to get the best personal injury lawyer you can; but also, you want to avoid litigation if at all possible. Proceeding to trial on a personal injury claim is expensive, stressful, and usually not worth the aggravation, so settle if you can. Good luck with your search: May you find the best attorney for your needs.
